INTERVIEW WITH FASHION FASHION DESIGNER MAYA HORIKAWA

Interview Questions:

Q.) What or who inspires?

I am inspired by Nature.
Colors, textures, and energy found in the Universe, is beyond any other force.

Q.) Why did you want to become a fashion designer?

I always loved fashion, and saw it as a form of art, which led me to start a blog which was full of my random thoughts of what I loved about fashion. I never thought this would lead to anything, but it soon led to invitations to fashion shows at NYFW, events with Lucky Magazine and an editor's pick by guest editor, Staci Bendet on Vanity Fair.
The blog, was what made me question what I wanted to do with fashion. I loved to write, and style, but designing was something I would have to go to school for.

After, a 10 episode series, TRASHION,  which I created on YouTube, I decided I needed to learn how to be a real designer.

Q.) How would you describe your fashion aesthetic? (ie, boho, street, avante garde, minimalist, classic, etc.)

My aesthetic is happiness. It is full of life, optimism and color. I believe clothes should make you feel better, and I avoid looks that emote sadness.

Q.) If you could give any advice to aspiring design students what would it be?

Dear Aspiring Students,

Never think or believe you cannot do something. Everyone started somewhere, and everyone was once a clueless, wide eyed, beginner. I can remember my first sewing class using industrial sewing machines, and I spent the entire class wanting to cry.
If you have an opinion, it needs to be heard. Never fear expressing yourself.
The world needs more artists.

Q.) How was your past experience preparing and participating in the fashion show?

The Fashion Show  was so much fun! It's an experience that will change any aspiring student and make them feel like a designer. It allows you to see what your design looks like under lights and in full movement. I highly recommend every student take part in this years show!

Q.) What is your favorite garment you have created ? (Please send photo)

My favorite garment was part of the Trashion Series, Episode 8. The whole garment lit  up and it was made of trash from a wedding. The idea was inspired by Rene Magritte's painting, "The Principle's of Pleasure".

Q.) What are your future aspirations as a fashion designer?

I have no idea. I am just enjoying the moment creating clothes that put a smile on my face.

Q.) How do you feel about incorporating sustainable methods to your designs? Would you pursue an eco friendly collection?

Of course! Sustainability is pure logic. When you do anything in life you should always consider it's effects around you. An eco- friendly fashion world is definitely in our near future.
